Mazda’s New Electric SUV: The EZ-60

Mazda’s EZ-60

Mazda recently pulled back the curtain on its new electric SUV, dubbed the EZ-60, which has been making some serious waves over in China. The EZ-60 has racked up over 10,000 pre-orders in just 48 hours since it was shown off. It’s clear there’s some buzz about it, even if not every pre-order will translate into an actual sale. With a minimal deposit requirement of merely $1.40, it’s a relatively low-risk bet for interested buyers.

Specs and Design

This model’s got some interesting specs tucked under its hood. It’s a range-extender version which comes equipped with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine. This isn’t your traditional engine setup—it’s there to charge the 31.7 kWh battery that powers the rear wheel’s 255 horsepower electric motor.

That’s just the range-extender variant, though. Mazda is keeping mum on the specs for the all-electric version, which has left potential buyers eagerly awaiting more details.

Platform and Collaboration

The EZ-60 is built on a platform it shares with Changan’s Deepal S07. This partnership helps Mazda speed up its entry into the electric vehicle market, leveraging Changan’s already established EV architecture. Yet, Mazda has put its distinctive design touches to ensure the EZ-60 carries that unmistakable Japanese flair in its styling—vital for markets outside of China where it’ll make its debut as the CX-6e.

Driving Experience

As far as driving feel goes, the EZ-60 is expected to have a smooth, confident drive that electric vehicles often offer. The 255-horsepower electric motor at the rear should provide plenty of punch for city driving and highway cruising. It’s comparable, perhaps, to other electric offerings like the Kia Niro EV or even rivals like the Ford Mustang Mach-E in terms of comfort and responsiveness. The engine kicking in only to recharge the battery keeps things quiet and efficient.

This Mazda won’t be coming to the U.S. anytime soon, but it’s definitely made a statement in the Chinese market. While American shores wait for their chance to see more from Mazda in the EV sector, this venture marks a bold step forward for the automaker.
