Twisted’s New Venture

Twisted Automotive, a specialist in customizing rugged Land Rover Defenders, has recently made an unexpected shift by taking on Volkswagen’s classic Beetle for their latest project. This time, Twisted has taken inspiration from the iconic Baja Bugs that became popular in Southern California during the late 1960s and early ’70s. These vehicles were modified with upgraded suspensions and chopped bodywork, allowing them to traverse the toughest of off-road terrains.
About the TBug
The TBug is Twisted’s nod to those original Baja Bugs, retaining the classic silhouette while incorporating modern touches. By enhancing the air-cooled engine, Twisted claims they’ve doubled its power, though the output remains underwhelming at less than 80 horsepower. The modifications don’t stop with the engine, as this model sports a robust suspension upgrade accompanied by custom wheels wrapped in chunky BF Goodrich tires, elevating its off-road prowess.
Visual Upgrades
The TBug stands out with its cutaway fenders for increased clearance, a shortened front trunk lid, and a revamped front fascia featuring twin LED headlights set closely together—staying true to the aesthetic of the Baja Bug. To complete the look, Twisted exposed the Beetle’s air-cooled flat-four engine by removing sections of the rear bodywork, offering a nod to the vehicle’s off-road heritage.
Driving Experience
Driving the TBug promises to be a nostalgic experience, albeit with contemporary influences. The underpowered engine when compared to today’s standards means this isn’t about speed; instead, it’s about the journey. The robust suspension and aggressive tires offer a comfortable and stable ride on rugged paths, and the classic Beetle dynamics are evident in every turn. It’s a vehicle that invites exploration at a relaxed pace rather than tearing through the desert like modern off-road vehicles.
Twisted’s Craftsmanship
Inside, Twisted has applied its luxury customization experience from its Defender projects to offer bespoke interior features that could satisfy any buyer’s desires. Though the exact pricing and production numbers are still under consideration, prospective buyers should prepare for a significant investment. Comparable to Twisted’s famed $200,000 Land Rover builds, the TBug requires a similar restoration and customization process, ensuring that each unit is uniquely personalized.
Twisted’s Legacy
This isn’t Twisted’s first foray outside of the Defender territory. The company has experimented with customized Suzuki Jimnys, taking these small SUVs and adding luxury touches and mechanical upgrades. Much like Singer Vehicle Design has done with Porsches, Twisted seeks to expand its portfolio by taking beloved car models and offering something special and modern for enthusiasts.
As it stands, the Twisted TBug is a testament to the power of nostalgia paired with modern ingenuity. It’s a special project for those who cherish the iconic Beetle while simultaneously seeking out off-road adventures with a touch of British craftsmanship.
