Great news on the safety front: the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has reported a significant drop in traffic fatalities in the United States. Last year, 39,345 individuals tragically lost their lives in traffic accidents. However, this number marks a 3.8% decline from the previous year, when 40,901 deaths were recorded. This decline is the first time figures have fallen below 40,000 since 2020, and credit is being given to continuous efforts to enhance road safety.

Quarterly Declines

The trend of reduced fatalities isn’t just a one-off event. Beginning in the second quarter of 2022, consecutive quarters have shown consistent declines, culminating in the fourth quarter of 2024. This marks 11 consecutive quarters where fatalities have decreased, signaling a promising shift in traffic safety dynamics. Driving Distances

Interestingly, despite the reduction in deaths, Americans are driving more. The Federal Highway Administration has noted a 1% increase in vehicle miles traveled last year. 2024 saw a rate of 1.20 fatalities per 100 million miles traveled, the lowest since 2019, although this rate is slightly above the 1.13 average from the seven years before the pandemic hit. This statistic reflects improved safety measures and growing public awareness.
