Toyota’s EV Surge

Toyota is shifting gears in the electric vehicle (EV) market, planning to expand from its existing five EV models to an impressive 15 by 2027. This expansion will span the globe, with production earmarked for Japan, China, the U.S., Argentina, and Thailand. Although Toyota has stayed mum on these reports, leaking details suggest that this move is a strategic response to external pressures like tariffs and government policies aimed at increasing EV output.
Production Plans

The U.S. is set to play a vital role in Toyota’s EV production strategy. Three-row electric SUVs are expected to roll out from plants in Kentucky and Indiana by 2026, powered by batteries from a brand-new North Carolina facility. Elsewhere, Toyota is broadening its horizons by initiating the production of the electric Hilux in Argentina and starting C-HR+ SUV manufacturing in Japan as early as September.
In China, the focus will be on crafting cost-effective models, such as the bZ3X SUV pegged at roughly $15,000. A next-gen Lexus EV is anticipated out of Japan by 2027, keeping things interesting for luxury EV enthusiasts stateside. Toyota’s current lineup includes the bZ4X and Lexus RZ in the U.S., demonstrating the company’s intent to cater to diverse consumer needs.
Sales Goals
Toyota has scaled down its initial projections from producing 1.5 million annual EVs by 2026 to 800,000. Despite this adjustment, the company sold about 140,000 EVs globally in 2024. Compared to Tesla’s and BYD’s sales hitting around 1.8 million each last year, Toyota’s figures highlight the competitive climb ahead.
Behind the Wheel
Driving a Toyota EV, such as the bZ4X, feels akin to slipping into a well-worn glove. The experience is seamless and intuitive, with a quiet yet responsive performance thanks to its commendable electrical drivetrain. Comparatively, it might lack the raw acceleration of a Tesla Model Y, yet the bZ4X makes up for this with a polished ride quality, echoing the dependable driving dynamics Toyota is known for.
Looking Ahead
As Toyota amps up its EV game amidst rivals like Tesla and BYD, the automaker’s focus on expanding its model range reflects a clear acknowledgment of the winds of change in the automotive world. Future releases could carve a larger slice of market share as Tesla navigates its challenges—the latter’s start to the year wasn’t exactly smooth sailing. Keeping an eye on Toyota’s upcoming EV lineup might just reveal an intriguing evolution in the electric landscape.
