The Next Chapter for Toyota’s Highlander and Sienna

Toyota is turning a new page with its Highlander SUV and Sienna minivan by introducing range-extender versions for the Chinese market. These models, which are very similar to the North American ones, will incorporate a new electric powertrain option. However, it remains to be seen if this change will cross over to other markets, including the U.S.
Highlander: Electrifying the SUV Experience

The current fourth-generation Highlander, launched in 2019, has been a cornerstone in Toyota’s SUV lineup with hybrid and plug-in hybrid options in China. For its next iteration, set for a 2026 release, a Range-Extender Electric Vehicle (EREV) model will cater to the Chinese audience. Whether this will expand to the U.S. remains unconfirmed, but the rising trend toward electrification makes it a possibility.
What’s New?
Toyota hinted at significant updates for the Highlander, possibly with revamped styling and advanced technology features, while sticking with an enhanced TNGA-K platform. Previously, there were talks of a fully electric version, but current plans suggest an increased hybrid presence instead.
Sienna Joins the EREV League
Similar strides are being made with the Sienna minivan. The fourth-generation Sienna, which came out in 2020, is lined up for a major update around 2027 in China, mirroring the Highlander’s powertrain advancements. This includes embracing an EREV setup likely akin to its SUV sibling.
How Will It Work?
The EREV system combines a small combustion engine acting as a generator with a robust battery and electric motors for propulsion. This setup grants the feel of an electric vehicle while extending its range and reducing dependency on charging stations.
Anticipated Tech Upgrades
Toyota is not just transforming under the hood. They plan to roll out the sixth-gen hybrid system, which targets better fuel economy and heightened performance. Improvements to Toyota Safety Sense 4.0, focusing on sensor enhancements and computational capabilities, are also in the pipeline.
Other Toyota Movements
Brief mention of a new-generation Camry indicates that a fresh model may surface later in the decade, likely integrating some attributes of the emerging Lexus ES. As Toyota looks to redefine its lineup, keeping an eye on how these changes unfold will be intriguing, especially for those interested in hybrid and electric advancements.
