Tesla Hybrid

In the quest to conquer range anxiety, a Tesla owner in China came up with an inventive yet unusual idea. For many EV drivers, the thought of running out of juice in a remote area without charging stations is a nightmare. This owner decided to modify their Tesla Model Y into a hybrid, using a gas generator for emergencies during long trips to destinations like the Mount Everest viewing platform.
Gas Generator

The Tesla owner equipped the vehicle with a gasoline generator attached to the rear of the SUV. This generator cost roughly $390 and was designed to serve as a backup power source rather than a primary way to charge the Model Y. The generator’s output wasn’t high enough to serve as a fast charger but could deliver about 3 kW of power, sufficient to add 12 miles of range per hour—even at high altitudes, such as the 17,400-foot-high Everest viewpoint.
Clever Solution?
Although it’s an innovative workaround, this setup is not a true range extender since the Model Y cannot be charged while driving. Using the generator consumes gas at a rate of about 22 cents per mile, which is more expensive than standard electric charging costs in places like China. However, for journeys through rugged and distant landscapes, the added sense of security could outweigh the cost.
Driving Experience
Driving a modified Tesla Model Y with a gas generator presents a unique experience. While the Model Y is known for its smooth and quiet drive typical of EVs, the addition of a gas generator introduces a layer of traditional automotive noise and complexity. Compared to conventional hybrids like a Toyota Prius, this setup seems unconventional and might not offer the same efficiency. Traditional hybrids integrate their systems more seamlessly, while this is more of a DIY solution. Nonetheless, it’s an interesting approach for those seeking security in an electric adventure.
It’s worth noting that Tesla has not shown interest in producing a factory range extender. Still, this owner’s project is not solitary. Other Tesla enthusiasts have also ventured into similar projects, with some even adding turbo-diesel engines for more extended range potential.
