A Look at the GR Supra’s Send-Off

It seems like just yesterday the Toyota Supra roared back onto the scene, and now, the fifth generation is already waving goodbye. Sharing DNA with the BMW Z4 and assembled in Austria, the GR Supra’s production will bow out by spring 2026. Toyota’s rolling out a Final Edition for the 2026 model year, marking this chapter’s end, yet the Supra name isn’t ready for retirement quite yet.
Not an Endless Wait This Time

The Supra isn’t disappearing from Toyota’s books for good, even if its production pauses. High-ranking Toyota executives have hinted at the car’s future comeback. Cooper Ericksen, who helms product planning and strategy for Toyota Motor North America, acknowledged that a next-gen Supra is more than likely, although the specifics on timing are still fuzzy.
And it seems it won’t take another two-decade hiatus like last time, when fans waited from the end of the fourth-gen until 2019 for the GR-branded upgrade. This time around, the pause should be much shorter, although Ericksen was tight-lipped about specifics.
What’s Holding It Back

Building a new-generation Supra isn’t a cheap venture, especially with global pressure on emissions and safety standards ramping up costs. Revamping the Supra isn’t just a refresh. As Ericksen put it, “It needs to be a new house.” And who doesn’t know that building a “new house” is no small feat?
Future Partnerships?
While Toyota hasn’t formally signed off on the Supra’s successor, the intentions seem positive. Whether it will follow the same co-development route with BMW or go in another partnership direction like the GR86 and Subaru BRZ duo, remains up in the air. David Christ, Toyota’s U.S. General Manager, is keen to see the Supra return, but he acknowledged the decision primarily rests in Japan’s hands.
It’s a balance game, as Toyota is currently overhauling its array of models, notably the new 2026 RAV4, which brings a fresh electric platform to the table, among other exciting upgrades. Toyota’s resources are spread thin across its extensive vehicle lineup in the U.S.
Looking Ahead
The Supra has left quite an impression since its debut and has become an integral part of Toyota’s Gazoo Racing (GR) lineup. A next-gen Supra would certainly reinforce the brand’s enthusiast line-up, tying together models like the GR Corolla and GR86.
Despite the pause, enthusiasts are reassured by Ericksen that while patience is key, this waiting period promises to be less daunting than a two-decade stretch. So, while it might feel like saying goodbye, it’s more of a see-you-later scenario for the Supra aficionados out there.
