To address this, Denver has introduced new regulations aimed at curbing chaotic scooter use.

Automated Deactivation

It’s no secret that the sidewalks of Denver have turned into unpredictable obstacle courses thanks to scooters. In response, the city now requires all scooters to automatically deactivate when they leave the street or bike lane and hit the sidewalk. This is part of a broader legislative effort to curb accidents and enhance pedestrian safety.

Pass a Test

Additionally, Denver will require riders to pass a short proficiency test before they can embark on their electric scooter adventures. Starting next year, they’ll need to prove they can operate the vehicles safely, making the streets a bit friendlier for everyone involved.

Parking Zones

Come 2027, Denver will implement rules to prevent the casual abandonment of scooters across the city. Dedicated parking zones will be established, like those being tested near Union Station, to keep sidewalks clear and organized.

Accident Stats

Recent data showed that the city’s emergency departments handled around 2,000 scooter-related injuries last year. Issues ranged from minor cuts and bruises to significant fractures and concussions, frequently involving pedestrians on sidewalks during busy street hours.

Changing Legal Landscape

Across the U.S., electric scooter laws vary widely. While some states like Pennsylvania and Delaware prohibit them outright, others have unique laws governing their use. Distinctly, states such as Rhode Island, Texas, and Utah have allowed scooters on sidewalks, but Colorado is poised to change its stance by 2026 with these new measures in place.
