So here’s the deal. Polestar is recalling around 27,816 units of its Polestar 2 electric vehicle. This time, it’s about a glitch with the reversing camera. Some folks reported that instead of getting a clear view of what’s behind them, they just get a frustrating “camera temporarily unavailable” message flashing on their screen. Sure, the Polestar 2 has a regular glass rear window, but that’s not the case for all their models. The Polestar 4, for instance, ditched the rear window entirely in favor of a camera view. That’s a bold move considering the challenges they’re facing now.

Background

The issue at hand relates to a sync problem between the Parking Assist Camera (PAC) and the car’s infotainment system. It’s certainly not a new headache for Polestar, as they had a similar recall last year. Back in June 2024, they also had to issue a recall for approximately 26,000 of the same model due to camera glitches. They attempted to resolve it then with an over-the-air software update, which didn’t quite provide the perfect fix they hoped for. Now they’re back at it, but the current fix requires the car to go back to the shop, as it’s not something that can be handled remotely.

Market Context

This recall is only affecting the Polestar 2, which has had a bit of a rough patch in the U.S. mainly due to previous import tariffs. And honestly, they’re not alone in this camera conundrum. Tons of car manufacturers like Ford, Hyundai, Kia, Jaguar Land Rover, and several brands under Stellantis have had similar issues. In a world where digital assistance is becoming the norm in cars, these sorts of complications aren’t exactly rare.

Despite these hiccups, the Polestar 2 remains an intriguing option for those in the electric vehicle market. It boasts a well-designed interior, proving that the driver and passengers can have a comfortable time during travels. On the road, the car runs smoothly, thanks to its robust electric motor and refined handling that competes pretty well with the likes of Tesla’s Model 3. Its driving dynamics are enjoyable, with the steering providing precision and a satisfying connection to the pavement.

However, for those driving vehicles such as the BMW i4 or Audi e-tron GT, similarities in driving feel might be noticeable, especially concerning how agile these vehicles manage urban and highway routes. The Polestar 2 sits comfortably among these competitors in terms of performance, offering around 400 horsepower, ensuring it’s not just about eco-friendly trips but also delivering an exciting drive.
