Tata Harrier.ev: India’s New Electric Contender

The automotive world has a new contender in the electric SUV market, and it’s coming from Tata Motors in India. With the launch of the Tata Harrier.ev, the company is taking a bold step towards electrification, with the car hitting the roads featuring a dual-motor all-wheel-drive option and a hearty 75 kWh battery pack.
Performance
The Harrier.ev takes inspiration from its parent company’s legacy, bearing similarities with the Land Rover Discovery Sport but taking it a step further by being fully electric. The range, based on India’s MIDC, reaches up to 390 miles on a single charge, showing off a compelling driving distance for any adventure.
Under the hood, the Harrier.ev is furnished with a dual-motor setup in its AWD variant. The pair of motors delivers a robust 156 horsepower in the front and an impressive 235 horsepower to the rear, with a combined torque of 372 lb-ft. This power translates into a nimble 0 to 62 mph in just 6.3 seconds, making it quite spirited for its class.
Design
Retaining the familiar design lines of the traditional Harrier, the new EV model incorporates elegant changes to suit its electric nature. It features a striking closed-off grille, redesigned bumpers, and those iconic 19-inch wheels. Not to mention, the subtle yet attractive EV badges add a touch of future-forward thinking.
Inside, the Harrier.ev impresses with a 14.5-inch Samsung Neo QLED display taking center stage. There’s a 540-degree surround camera, a 10-speaker JBL sound system, panoramic sunroof, and a power-tailgate, all supported by Tata’s TiDAL platform for seamless connectivity and over-the-air updates.
Driving Experience
The driving modes enhance the versatility of this SUV, offering six terrain modes including options like Snow/Grass and Rock Crawl. Even a Drift mode is in the mix for those who enjoy a spirited drive. The Ultra Glide multi-link rear suspension ensures smooth rides, utilizing advanced frequency-dependent dampers to tackle various terrains.
Pricing and Availability
Expected to make waves in the Indian market, preorders for the Harrier.ev begin on July 2, with a starting price of approximately $25,100. While this might be a leap from the traditional combustion-engine Harrier priced at around $17,500, the tech and performance enhancements offer a compelling value proposition.
Tata Motors is certainly setting a strong precedent with the Harrier.ev, blending tried-and-true design elements with cutting-edge electric technology. This SUV not only represents an evolution in Tata’s line-up but also signals a shift in consumer expectations in emerging markets.
