McLaren SLR Gem

There’s something special about the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. Even though over 2,000 cars rolled off the production line between 2003 and 2010, seeing one still feels like bumping into a celebrity at the grocery store. This car wasn’t just a product of the Mercedes-McLaren partnership; it was a supercar that married Formula 1-inspired technology with the comforts of a grand tourer.
But for some owners, this wasn’t enough. Enter McLaren Special Operations (MSO), who, in 2018, decided to offer the discerning SLR owner an even more exclusive thrill ride. The “McLaren Edition” upgrade was available only to existing SLR owners, and only 25 took the plunge. When compared, this makes the McLaren Edition three times rarer than the Stirling Moss Edition, setting the stage for a truly unique driving experience. One of these rarities is currently up for sale.
Upgrades Galore

The current SLR up for grabs was initially a Japanese-market vehicle, shipped to Tokyo in September 2005. Under its current ownership since 2017, it underwent the MSO transformation in 2019, which set back the owner over $175,000. This was about more than just adding a few bells and whistles; MSO went all out, revamping almost every corner of the car.
Spring and damper revisions enhanced its handling, with a slight 0.4-inch drop in ride height. Aerodynamics weren’t left behind—fitted with a carbon-Kevlar front floor, a revamped rear diffuser, sleek 722 GT-style front wheel arch vents, and a larger active air brake, it boasts 15% more downforce than the 722 Edition. The engine remained unchanged, yet a ceramic-coated exhaust was added for a little extra auditory indulgence.
The changes weren’t just under the skin. The McLaren Edition sports redesigned front intakes that mimic the McLaren logo, 722 S-spec wheels, tinted lights, and a flashy metallic red paint which might even pass as black depending on the lighting. Inside, black Alcantara with red stitching, “MSO” branded headrests, and a slick Alcantara wheel complete the package.
A $700K Experience

This SLR’s price tag is hefty at $700,000, which makes sense when considering its provenance and the meticulous work carried out by McLaren. With only 17,523 miles on the clock and a mere 746 of those post-upgrade, it’s in remarkable condition. Offered through RM Sotheby’s, this car still sits in Japan, waiting for its next lucky owner.
Driving it is bound to be an event. Compared to the original, it feels even more nimble, thanks to those suspension tweaks. Think of it as having the agility of a Jaguar E-Type combined with the power of a Dodge Viper but with a sophistication that’s distinctly European.
