Mazda’s Major Electric Leap

Mazda is revving up its engines in the electric vehicle race with the introduction of the 2025 EZ-60, a cutting-edge electric SUV primed to give the Tesla Model Y some friendly competition. This new kid on the block was first revealed on Chinese social media and acts as the SUV version of the earlier EZ-6 sedan. It’s a shining result of Mazda’s ongoing 50:50 joint venture with China’s state-owned giant, Changan, signaling a bold entry into the global EV arena.
Globally, the EZ-60 is set to be branded as the CX-6e, much like the strategy used for its sedan sibling, the EZ-6. Both are expected to redefine Mazda’s footprint in the electric crossover world, moving past the lukewarm reception of the MX-30, the brand’s first attempt at an EV.
Distinctive Design Cues

The EZ-60 takes inspiration from Mazda’s Arata concept, adopting a familiar yet fresh design direction. It proudly wears Mazda’s “Soul of Motion” design, showcasing sleek, full-width front light bars, sharp LED headlights, and a modernized logo. The most striking feature has to be the flying buttresses at the rear, a touch rarely seen on SUVs.
High-tech camera-based side mirrors replace traditional ones, projecting the outside world onto screens inside. While the interior remains under wraps, expectations are high for a minimalist layout similar to the EZ-6, characterized by a large central touchscreen and premium materials.
Power Options

The EZ-60 is built on a platform likely shared with the Deepal S07, one of Changan’s electric-offspring. It offers two configurations: a pure electric model and one with a range-extended setup featuring a 1.5-liter gasoline engine acting as a generator. Equipped with a 79.97 kWh battery, the electric variant boasts a range of up to approximately 295 miles under the WLTP cycle and can charge swiftly from 30% to 80% in just about 35 minutes thanks to its 93 kW charging capability.
The global market’s preferences remain a mystery, but Mazda’s standard practice has been to keep international offerings all-electric, as observed with the EZ-6. Should the range-extended version launch globally, it could deliver a compelling alternative to Tesla’s solely electric Model Y, especially where charging facilities are still growing.
Looking Ahead
Mazda hints at a broader lineup from its partnership with Changan. Future models might grace global roads between 2028 and 2030. Meanwhile, Mazda isn’t putting all its eggs in one basket. They’re also crafting a dedicated EV platform due by 2027.
As for the MX-30, it continues to roll with a varied powertrain mix, including a rotary engine range-extender and mild hybrids. The EZ-60 is set to be the catalyst Mazda needs to really shine in the EV sector. With its snazzy design, versatile powertrains, and ambitions for global reach, it could finally stand toe-to-toe with the reigning Model Y.
