Lexus Joins EV SUV Race

Lexus, the luxury arm of Toyota, is gearing up to expand its line of electric vehicles with an exciting new addition: a three-row SUV. This development is based on the Electrified concept from 2021, which hints at sharing components with the existing RZ to streamline production costs. Recent trademark filings for the TZ450e and TZ550e suggest that Lexus is working on multiple variants for this new SUV.
Design Changes

The Lexus TZ, still in development, is expected to use the same platform as the Toyota bZ5X. Designer Theophilus Chin has imagined the production model for us, tweaking the earlier concept by adapting it to more conventional styling while maintaining the brand’s identity. The headlights are adjusted to align with current Lexus designs, while the bold front keeps its character with recognizable elements.
Practical Adjustments

The side profile of Chin’s rendering showcases practical solutions like traditional door handles instead of the concept’s flush fittings. The updated appearance includes standard wing mirrors and new wheel designs, necessary modifications for real-world use. Similarly, the rear end is visually busy, with smaller taillights making an appearance. It’s a good snapshot of what might reach the showroom floors eventually.
What’s Under the Hood

The TZ lineup could feature the same 77 kWh battery found in the RZ, which provides ample power with its various setup options. For instance, the RZ 350e runs with a single motor delivering 224 hp, offering a range of up to 357 miles. Higher trims, like the RZ 500e, include dual motors for a combined 375 hp and a brisk 0-62 mph in 4.6 seconds.
Lexus’s plans for the TZ550e suggest that this larger SUV may require a larger battery, especially considering the competition like the Kia EV9, which tops off with a 99.8 kWh pack. Expectations are high for Lexus to bring something notable to the three-row electric SUV market.
Driving Experience
While the TZ isn’t on the road yet, one can imagine its driving experience based on its counterparts. Expect a blend of sophistication and quiet assurance typical of Lexus. Compared to other electric SUVs like the Kia EV9, the TZ might offer the comfort and features luxury buyers anticipate, but only time will reveal how it stacks up in terms of range and power.
