Jeep’s New Camping Innovation

At the latest Overland Expo West, Jeep showcased something pretty unique—a tent attached right on top of a concept vehicle. This isn’t just any tent either; it’s a new Awning and Rooftop Tent (ARTT) concept developed with Dometic, and it’s mounted on the Wrangler 4xe Sunchaser concept. Picture this: a tent made from a carbon fiber shell sitting directly on your vehicle’s roof, eliminating the need for a bulky roof rack. Plus, it’s streamlined for better aerodynamics, blazing a trail right in the comfort of a Jeep.
Tent Specs
So, what does this innovative tent offer? It’s a snug fit for a queen-size mattress and can be accessed from inside the Jeep, thanks to the Wrangler’s removable Freedom Panels. This design turns the whole setup into a cozy hideaway perfect for any camping escapade. There’s even a carbon fiber step that can be added over the center console to make getting in and out a breeze.
Jeep partnered with Dometic to incorporate their AIR Frame Inflation technology, simplifying tent setup—just park at your campsite, and the integrated awning pops out 270 degrees in minutes. Once the tent is inflated, you have spacious sleeping quarters to compliment your outdoor adventure.
On the Road
The vehicle beneath the tent? It was none other than the Wrangler 4xe Sunchaser, premiered earlier at the Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, Utah. This vehicle didn’t just tote the tent; it brought its own flair with ventilated fender flares, rock rails, and side-mounted storage boxes drawing inspiration from the Land Rover Defender. Equipped with a Warn winch and a unique push bar, the customized leather interior wrapped with gloss black trim just seals the deal.
The Sunchaser’s not just for show—it comes with a 2-inch lift and rolls on 37-inch BFGoodrich KM3 mud terrain tires. This is a Wrangler that’s got the muscle to match its outdoor persona.
Driving Feel
Driving the Wrangler 4xe Sunchaser isn’t just about getting from A to B; it’s an experience reminiscent of the traditional rugged Jeep feel—revamped for both comfort and adventure. The lifted stance offers excellent ground clearance for off-road endeavors, while the hefty tires give a commanding grip on muddied trails. It blends the familiar Jeep resilience with refined touches, such as the high-tech tent, ready to elevate any adventure.
When compared to other vehicles like the Ford Bronco, the Sunchaser edges out with its unique camping capabilities and easily scores points with off-road purists. It combines rugged durability with enhanced practicality, making it a versatile choice for weekend adventurers and hardcore campers alike. In the world of camping vehicles, this concept lands itself as an innovative pioneer.
