There’s been some buzz around the Genesis brand and where it’s heading with its sedans. Currently, Genesis offers an impressive lineup that includes the G70, G80, and G90. Prices for these models range from roughly $42,500 to about $89,700, which covers everything from entry-level luxury to high-end sophistication.

Market Focus

Ever since Genesis made its mark on the luxury segment, there’s been a clear intention to edge into the territory dominated by German automakers. And it looks like the strategy might be shifting yet again. The word is out that Genesis is considering moving their focus to larger, more premium vehicles. Essentially, they might be thinking about trimming their sedan lineup by putting the G70 on the chopping block.

The G70’s Fate

The G70 has been a solid choice for those looking for some luxury without splurging too much. But the signs point to Genesis aiming to improve their brand image by emphasizing models like the G80 and G90, which can enhance the brand’s status more significantly. While a front-wheel drive model at around $45,000 (think Mercedes CLA) sounds appealing, it might be off the Genesis radar as of now.

Marc Choi, the global product officer for Genesis, has indicated that there’s more interest in elevating the brand through its more prestigious models. This doesn’t bode well for the entry-level G70, especially when past models like the Kia Stinger, a close competitor, have already been retired. Genesis does, however, hint at the possibility of evolving the G70 into something more affordable, though not at the expense of blurring lines with Hyundai and Kia models.

Driving Experience

The G70, especially the 3.3 Turbo V6, offers one of the most exhilarating experiences in its class. The blend of performance and comfort is quite similar to what one might experience behind the wheel of a BMW 3 Series — a sharp, responsive, and engaging drive. This sedan is built for the driver who appreciates precision and connection with the road, without constantly reminding one that it’s a luxury ride.

In contrast, the larger G80 and G90 models are more comparable to something like a Mercedes E-Class or S-Class, providing a plush, quiet ride with a focus on grandeur and technology. For Genesis, the road ahead seems to be pointing towards larger sedans and SUVs that symbolize luxury and prestige. Whether or not they’ll find space in their lineup for a redefined G70 remains to be seen.
