Fiat 500 goes Hybrid

The iconic Fiat 500 is getting a facelift, and this time, it’s not entirely shedding its combustion roots. As the electric revolution sweeps across the automotive industry, Fiat is taking a step back, refitting its 500e electric model with a hybrid powertrain due to lackluster EV sales. Slated for production in late 2025, the new 500 Hybrid is anticipated to bring a breath of fresh air to its lineup.
Under the Hood

While Fiat is keeping mum on the exact specifications, it’s expected that the new 500 Hybrid will feature a 1.0-liter, mild-hybrid engine similar to the one used in the Fiat Panda. This turbocharged, three-cylinder engine delivers about 69 horsepower. In comparison, the current all-electric Fiat 500e produces between 94 to 117 horsepower depending on the battery size, so don’t anticipate electrifying speed. A six-speed manual transmission, indicated by the interior sneak peeks, suggests a more engaging driving experience, which many enthusiasts may appreciate.
Design Tweaks
In terms of looks, the changes are subtle but necessary. The hybrid version will feature a front grille necessary for cooling, which differentiates it slightly from its completely electric sibling. Overall, Fiat aims to retain the beloved classic 500 styling with minimal interruptions to its design aesthetic.
Driving Feel
Driving the Fiat 500 Hybrid is expected to offer a more traditional, visceral experience compared to the EV model. The manual transmission will likely connect the driver more deeply with the car, allowing for smoother gear changes and a more responsive drive. While it may not have the instant torque of an electric motor, the hybrid’s setup will provide a balanced mix of efficiency and performance, suitable for the Fiat 500’s urban-focused design.
Fiat’s Strategy
The strategic pivot towards hybridization appears driven by market demands. After several production pauses for the 500e due to unsold inventory, Fiat aims to attract its core audience by offering a more budget-friendly and familiar engine setup. As Olivier Francois, Fiat’s CEO, mentioned, their goal is to strike a chord with cost-conscious buyers who admire the 500’s accessible, iconic design.
Future Outlook
While the Fiat 500 Hybrid prepares for its debut, the brand’s Abarth performance division is choosing to remain electric. The Scorpion-branded Abarth variants will capitalize on the electric motor’s strengths, delivering performance that the mild-hybrid platform can’t match in its current form.
Ultimately, the Fiat 500 Hybrid represents a pragmatic approach, catering to those seeking an affordable yet stylish option in this new automotive era. Keep an eye out for it in the coming years; its classic meets contemporary formula might just hit the sweet spot for many fans.
