The Rise of Electrified Vehicles

Electric vehicle sales are gaining momentum in 2025, bouncing back from a less impressive 2024. Global sales of electrified vehicles, which include battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), have shot up to record levels this year. However, new policy moves such as subsidy cuts and tariffs under the Trump administration could influence this growth as time goes on.

Recent data from the first quarter indicates that approximately 4.1 million electrified vehicles were sold worldwide. This marks a 29% surge compared to the same period in 2024, according to statistical insights from Rho Motion.

North America’s Growth

In North America, the sales of electrified vehicles reached about 500,000 units in Q1, reflecting a 16% increase compared to last year. While the breakdown between BEVs and PHEVs isn’t detailed on a regional basis, previous data revealed that 296,227 pure electric vehicles were sold in the United States during this period – an 11.4% year-over-year increase.

Despite these gains, other markets are seeing even sharper growth. Europe, for instance, sold nearly 900,000 electrified vehicles in the first quarter, led by remarkable strides in countries like Italy, Germany, and the UK.

Global Trends

China continues to dominate as the top nation for electrified vehicle sales, with 2.4 million units sold so far this year, marking a 36% increase. This outsizes the North American market significantly.

Meanwhile, sales from the rest of the world collectively rose by 27%, now totaling around 300,000 units. Europe displayed a healthy surge, with BEV sales up by 27% and PHEV sales growing by a more modest 10%.
