Stellantis’ Leap

Back in 2023, Stellantis made a big move in the electric vehicle (EV) sector by investing $1.6 billion in the Chinese company, Leapmotor. This deal granted Stellantis a 21% stake, allowing them to bring Leapmotor’s vehicles into the European market. However, it seems not everything has gone smoothly, as they’ve hit some initial snags.
Production Pause

A Stellantis manufacturing plant in Tychy, Poland, which had been assembling the compact T03 electric car, ceased operations on March 30. While Stellantis hasn’t officially explained this halt, it’s suspected that no plans are on the horizon to restart production in Europe. The news is a blow to Stellantis, especially considering their recent decision to cancel the production of another Leapmotor EV at the same facility.
Driving Influence

What’s likely adding to this production halt is the Chinese government’s stance. Following the European Union’s decision to impose a 21% tariff on Chinese-made EVs, China advised its automakers to rethink their hefty investments in certain European nations, including Poland. This decision comes after ten EU countries supported the new tariffs, with Poland among them.
Stellantis Strategy
Despite these setbacks, Stellantis still holds a 51% stake in Leapmotor’s international ventures. This grants them exclusive rights to manufacture and market Leapmotor EVs outside of China. Stellantis remains positive, expressing continued commitment to rolling out Leapmotor vehicles in Europe while exploring alternative production avenues.
Considering Options
In light of these shifts, Spain emerges as a potential new production location for an upcoming Leapmotor model, the B10 electric crossover. Germany’s Handelsblatt, reports that Spain, having abstained from the tariff vote, might just be the ideal hub for Stellantis’ future European endeavors with Leapmotor.
Driving Experience
Behind the wheel, the Leapmotor T03, though compact, feels surprisingly stable. Its electric powertrain offers the kind of instant torque loved by many EV enthusiasts, making city drives a breeze. While it might not compete with luxury EVs in terms of features, its nimbleness and ease of use make it an appealing choice for urban commuters.
As Stellantis navigates the geopolitical and production challenges, it’s essential to consider how these might affect consumer confidence and market strategy in the rapidly evolving EV space. Continued innovation and flexibility will be key to staying ahead in this electrification race.
