Every other day, it seems like a fresh electric SUV is being unveiled, and now, Land Rover is ready to join the parade. The scoop is on a smaller, electric Defender, possibly dubbed the Defender Sport. Recently, a prototype of this upcoming model was seen during testing, raising anticipation for its production version.

The new Land Rover reveals a strong sense of familiarity, holding onto that iconic boxy shape which enthusiasts appreciate in the larger Defender. The styling direction seen in prototype renderings suggests that it will carry similar design cues, such as flared arches and a streamlined silhouette. This mini Defender will run on Jaguar Land Rover’s latest EMA platform, heralding an 800-volt electric system. Slated for a 2027 launch as a 2028 model, the small Defender could hit showrooms alongside or even preceding the smaller G-Class. Pricing should be friendlier than the present full-size Defenders, which start at $60,800 for a Defender 110 and $56,900 for a Defender 90.

Driving Dynamics

The forthcoming Defender Sport EV is expected to encapsulate the same drivable dynamics seen in the current Defender but with an added layer of smooth electric propulsion.
