De Tomaso P72 Launches

De Tomaso P72 Unveiled

After nearly six years since its initial concept emerged, De Tomaso has officially rolled out the first production-spec model of the highly anticipated P72 supercar. Dubbed DT0001, this version is more than just a car; it represents a significant milestone in De Tomaso’s journey. The sleek model, finished in a dazzling combination of white and copper, sets the tone for an upcoming line of just 72 customer units. Deliveries for this manual-transmission-only model are expected to start in late 2025, marking a slight delay from earlier plans.

Design and Performance

The P72 maintains almost all the visual flair that enthusiasts fell in love with at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed. With a silhouette that marries vintage inspiration with modern flair, the car retains its low stance and dynamic lines. Updates to the concept include functional window cutouts and a revised rear diffuser to enhance aerodynamics. This design nods to the past with a spirit reminiscent of the 1965 De Tomaso P70 and echoes high-end classics like the 1966 Ferrari 330 P3 and the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale.

Customization and Interior

The P72 offers a level of customization that’s hard to find. Customers can choose from heritage-inspired paint jobs, a naked carbon exterior, as well as bespoke interiors that include hand-stitched leather and precision-machined metal. The show car features a white exterior accented with copper-colored wheels—sure to draw eyes wherever it’s parked. Inside, the absence of modern touchscreens is notable, replaced instead by analog dials and rotary switches, offering a tactile, engaging user experience.

Powertrain and Chassis

Underneath its gorgeous body, the De Tomaso P72 is driven by a supercharged 5.0-liter V8, a departure from the concept’s V12 roots. Built with Ford and Roush’s expertise, this engine delivers 700 horsepower and a hefty 605 lb-ft of torque. This raw power is delivered exclusively to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox. The car’s construction includes a bespoke carbon fiber chassis that incorporates a central monocoque and subframes, coupled with pushrod suspension and manually adjustable dampers. It all translates to a driving experience that’s raw and unfiltered, harkening back to the golden age of sports cars.

Pricing and Availability

The P72 will come with a price starting at approximately $1.8 million, reinforcing its exclusivity. As for the P900, an ultra-exclusive track-only version with only 18 units expected to be made, details remain sparse. However, this focus on craftsmanship and uniqueness underscores De Tomaso’s commitment to producing iconic, timeless creations.

CEO Norman Choi shared his vision: “The P72 was our promise to faithfully revive a historic marque. This first production-specification vehicle embodies everything we stand for: a mechanical soul, timeless beauty, and a driving experience that rises above modern convention. It is our echo through time – now made real.”
