Do it again, and the stakes rise to a $1,000 fine and possibly 90 days behind bars. Moreover, repeat offenders could have their driving licenses suspended for up to a year. A mandatory court appearance is part of the package for anyone caught exceeding that 50 mph over the limit mark.

The new law was largely influenced by a tragic incident involving young Anthony Reznick, an 11-year-old who lost his life after being hit by a speeding driver in 2022. The driver had a long list of past traffic issues and was racing through a neighborhood at a blinding 85 mph without even turning on the headlights. Even with these violations, the driver faced no criminal charges, sparking calls for stronger legal measures.

Concerns Raised

While the intention behind the law is clear—making roads safer—there’s been criticism regarding its broad reach. State Republican Mike Gottlieb has been a vocal opponent, labeling the legislation as “constitutionally overbroad” and warning it could burden court systems significantly. He acknowledges the need for stricter penalties but suggests a more thought-out approach should be revisited in the next legislative session.
