The Rise of Chinese Cars in Russia

When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, Western sanctions hit hard and many big-name automakers packed up and left the Russian market. This exit left room for Chinese manufacturers to step in, offering a lifeline to Russia’s struggling automotive industry. Now, brands like Otting are poised to introduce vehicles such as the Chinese-made Nissan Patrol into the Russian market by next year. This revamped Nissan Patrol, known as the 2025 Armada in the States, is set to make waves.

New Chinese Entrants

Chinese automotive companies found a nifty way to capitalize on the absence of Western brands by rebranding vehicles out of reach for Russian customers and offering them under new labels. The Nissan Patrol, while being withdrawn from sale in Russia following the West’s pullout, finds its new identity through Otting’s efforts. Described as the ultimate Japanese SUV in Russia’s market, this vehicle will begin hitting showrooms by 2026. While specific details about its specifications remain limited, enthusiasts eagerly await what this version of the Patrol has in store, given its heritage and power.

Otting’s Broader Strategy

In addition to the Patrol, Otting is not slowing down. They plan to introduce the Rich 7, which is another noteworthy entry. It’s essentially a Nissan Navara-based pickup, flaunting a unique X-shaped grille and stylish “tiger” headlights. With both gasoline and diesel options under the hood, this truck presents a choice between a 228-hp turbocharged gas engine and a 166-hp diesel engine. Transmissions include a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic, available in both two-wheel and four-wheel drive configurations.

Further adding to their lineup, Otting will roll out the Z9 pickup, which is an original creation by the brand. The Z9 is said to sport a hybrid system, boasting a combined output of nearly 359 horsepower from a turbo gas engine and an electric motor. It promises an impressive range, enough to tackle long-distance journeys seamlessly.

The driving dynamics of these vehicles, especially the rebranded Patrol, remain to be fully experienced.
