The New BMW iX3: What’s Under the Hood?

Fast forward a bit, BMW’s Neue Klasse concept was a hot topic back in 2023, showcasing a fresh chapter for the brand’s upcoming fleet. Now the spotlight is on the new BMW iX3 — set to be a pretty big deal as it brings this dreamy concept to a reality. Forget about the sleek sedan first teased; this one’s a crossover, drawing from the BMW Vision Neue Klasse X Concept.
This iX3 is lined up to make its grand entrance in Germany during the autumn months, offering a glimpse into the next generation of BMW’s electric ambitions. So, here’s the lowdown on what’s got everyone buzzing about this upcoming Bimmer.
High-Tech Marvel

The iX3 is gearing up as a tech powerhouse with an 800V setup that works smoothly with 400V fast charge stations. Its battery game is strong with new-gen cylindrical cells offering 20% more energy density over the traditional prismatics. Based on the WLTP test cycle, these batteries go up to 497 miles a pop, but, on the EPA’s scale, expect around 400 miles stateside. That’s still nothing to sneeze at. Charging is a breeze too, packing a 400 kW capability — meaning over 217 miles of juice gets added back in just 10 minutes.
There’s a fresh, out-the-box Gen6 powertrain under the hood that promises peppier performance while being easy on the batteries. The iX3 integrates BMW’s “Heart of Joy” system, a next-gen control unit processing data ten times faster to refine the balance between power, braking, and steering.
A Futuristic Drive

The cabin promises to be a tech lover’s dream, even though the images don’t show it off just yet. Expect to find a Panoramic Vision paired with a windshield-projected 3D Head-Up Display, keeping all essentials in the driver’s sightline. There’s also going to be a sleek matrix-backlit screen just near the steering wheel.
The steering wheel itself isn’t just for show, featuring tech controls that light up beneath its surface. Driving aids are top-notch, with quicker processing speeds and AI handling everything from lane warnings to safe exits. The iX3 even brings in a Motorway & City Assistant for hands-free cruising.
What’s Coming
Bidirectional charging is a standout feature in the iX3, offering 3.7kW to power devices, both from car to home and back, or right into the electric grid to lighten the load. A whole new wallbox with up to 19.2kW capability for charging and feeding back is part of the package, keeping energy flow versatile.
The full reveal is slated for the IAA Mobility show in Munich, Germany, come September 2025. Beginning of production kicks off later that year in Hungary. This iX3 isn’t just another electric SUV — it seems to be BMW’s nod to an electric future, all wrapped into a crossover shell ready to hit the streets.
