It looks like the ever-popular Audi Q5 has hit a bit of a snag. Audi is recalling a hefty number of Q5 and Q5 Sportback vehicles due to a concerning fire risk that has emerged. A striking 89,417 units of these models are now part of this recall.

This whole issue boils down to the screws in the cylinder head. Apparently, they weren’t tightened properly during assembly, and over the course of time, they might come loose. This could potentially lead to minor oil leaks. Once you’ve got oil leaking under the hood, there’s a real chance it could hit some hot engine components and cause a fire. As of the latest reports, Audi has recorded 11 incidents where fires could be linked to this problem.

The recall affects the 2022 through 2024 model years for Audi Q5s and Q5 Sportbacks. For regular Audi Q5s produced between July 24, 2021, and August 23, 2024, a total of 78,313 vehicles are implicated. The Q5 Sportbacks, produced from August 7, 2021, to July 2, 2024, add another 11,104 cars to this recall count.

Audi has taken this seriously since spring of 2023 when customer complaints began to spring up. By January 2024, dealerships had already been advised to start inspecting and securing those pesky cylinder head cover screws to prevent any mishaps.

What to Do

If any drivers notice smoke or unusual smells from the engine bay, it’s recommended they stop driving and contact Audi services right away. Owners of the affected models should be receiving notifications from Audi starting around July 8, urging them to visit a dealer for inspection and possible repairs.
