Alfa Romeo’s Struggles in 2024

Alfa Romeo had a rough year in 2024, moving only 8,865 vehicles in the U.S. market. This performance looks even more concerning globally, where the brand managed to sell only 62,000 units, missing their target of 80,000 to 90,000. The Turin-based automaker’s aging lineup, especially the Stelvio SUV, adds to its plight. The Stelvio was once a promising addition designed to uplift Alfa Romeo’s market presence much like the Cayenne did for Porsche back in the day.

Stelvio’s Aging

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio had its prime when it first launched in 2016, capturing the attention of many with its sporty DNA and engaging dynamics. Designed to elevate the brand’s success, it’s become outdated nearly a decade later. While there were grand plans for a new model by the 2026 model year, recent industry shifts have delayed the release by a year due to fluctuating trends in the automotive sector, specifically the reduced demand for EVs.

Future Tech

Originally poised as a fully electric model based on the Stellantis STLA Large platform, the Stelvio had a promising electric future, but plans shifted towards a hybrid setup. This intricate development, however, isn’t as straightforward. Though the platform supports hybrid systems, the integration requires substantial development time, hence pushing the anticipated launch to late 2026.

Impact on Giulia

Interestingly, despite this SUV setback, the plans for the Giulia redesign remain on track for a 2026 reveal. Alfa Romeo faces significant pressure to refresh its lineup as part of Stellantis’ broader objectives to revitalize Italian automotive production and sustain jobs. This endeavor was pitched to the Italian government back in 2024.

Driving Feel

Driving the current Stelvio offers a blend of Italian flair with dynamic handling, somewhat resembling the experience in a Porsche Macan, yet distinct in its raw, spirited push. Its firm ride and direct steering keep drivers engaged, making it a perfect companion for winding roads. However, its cabin is starting to show age, lacking some modern tech found in newer competitors like the BMW X3 and Audi Q5. The transition to its hybrid future will hopefully retain this vivacious spirit while adding efficiency.
