Tonale’s Role

The Alfa Romeo Tonale is more than just another compact SUV; it’s Alfa Romeo’s first foray into electrified vehicles and a key player in their strategy to tackle the bustling compact SUV market. However, this stylish crossover is stirring up quite a bit of concern, especially among the Italian police force Carabinieri. A union associated with the officers, citing concerns about handling and safety, has officially filed a complaint against the SUV.
Complaints

Since its introduction to the police force, some officers have been less than impressed. Though promised a comfortable ride, the Tonale’s handling has reportedly left much to be desired, especially when operated in high-speed chases or rough terrain—critical settings for police work. According to Unarma, the Carabinieri Trade Union Association, this isn’t a minor gripe. They’ve gone so far as to take the issue to the Rome Public Prosecutor’s Office, highlighting incidents and “operational reports” indicating “critical issues” with road handling.
Company Response
Despite the strong claims against it, Alfa Romeo stands by the Tonale. The company insists that the vehicle meets stringent safety regulations and emphasizes its testing alongside police forces. In their defense, Alfa Romeo cites the SUV’s popularity, having sold over 100,000 units worldwide, as a testament to its capabilities. Yet, they are keeping legal channels open, suggesting the matter could see further escalation.
Vehicle Specs
The police model of the Tonale is essentially a modified civilian version. Delivered in 2023, the 400 vehicles ordered by the Carabinieri come equipped with additions like partial armor, police radios, flashing LEDs, and a compartment for equipment. Under the hood, they use a mild-hybrid 1.5-liter engine generating 158 horsepower, mirroring the civilian model’s output. It’s speculated that the vehicle’s modifications, included armor, could be influencing its performance, particularly its stability and handling.
Driving Experience
Driving the Tonale is akin to experiencing a slender, spirited Italian stallion—perfectly adequate for leisurely drives through city streets but perhaps not built for the rigors of police duty. Its chassis is set higher than some other SUVs, which might affect cornering stability. Similar vehicles, such as the Jeep Grand Cherokee or even certain BMWs, offer more agility and grounded handling, crucial for swift emergency response scenarios.
Incident and Investigation
Recently, a troubling event came to light when footage surfaced of a Tonale rollover accident, injuring an officer in the process. Such incidents have brought more attention to Unarma’s call for a deeper investigation into the vehicle’s suitability for police work. While the vehicle technically excels in some areas, the practicality of its use in high-stakes situations leaves room for debate.
Whether Alfa Romeo and the Carabinieri can reach an understanding remains uncertain. One thing is for sure: the critical gaze of both the law enforcement community and global automotive enthusiasts will remain fixed on the Tonale until there’s a resolution.
