Driving the 2026 Lexus RZ

The 2026 Lexus RZ lineup for North America is here, and while it’s packing some power under the hood, there’s a twist. Though the European versions get a futuristic steer-by-wire system, American models stick with a traditional steering wheel. Let’s break down what this new model gets right and where it keeps things conventional.
Models & Power
Three variants of the RZ will hit American roads. It starts with the RZ 350e, sporting a 221-horsepower motor. This version can go from 0 to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds and offers an extensive range of about 300 miles on a full charge, courtesy of its 74.69 kWh battery pack.
Moving up, the RZ 450e AWD adds another motor to the front wheels, pushing combined output to 308 horsepower. This setup cuts the sprint to 60 mph down to 4.9 seconds, although range dips to around 260 miles.
Sitting at the top of the range, the RZ 550e F Sport AWD is where things get interesting. It cranks out an impressive 402 horsepower and blasts from 0 to 60 in just 4.1 seconds. This version benefits from a 76.96 kWh battery, though the extra performance shrinks the range to a modest 225 miles.
Charging and Tech
A neat touch across the board is the inclusion of an NACS plug, facilitating quicker charging from 10% to 80% in under 30 minutes. An 11 kW onboard AC charger is standard too, a step up from the 7 kW in the previous model.
The tech inside sees some luxury additions, like a panoramic roof switching from clear to opaque, and in the RZ 550e, black Ultrasuede trim with blue stitching adds a touch of class.
Driving Feel
While some might have hoped for the advanced steer-by-wire experience of the European counterpart, the more conventional North American setup still delivers a robust driving feel. The absence of steer-by-wire means steering inputs are communicated through the wheel as usual, maintaining familiarity for drivers not quite ready for the next-gen tech.
With the RZ 550e F Sport, the virtual gear shift, dubbed M Mode, allows for paddle shifting which simulates a manual, offering a sporty and engaging driving vibe. It’s pretty similar to what’s seen in some sporty competitors, keeping drivers in tune with engine feel.
Overall, the 2026 Lexus RZ delivers a solid mix of performance, range, and comfort. It’s a strong contender in the growing EV market, especially for those who appreciate a blend of tradition with a dash of innovation.
