The New Honda GT

Honda just rolled out two fresh variations of its GT concept at the
Shanghai Auto Show, setting the stage for their foray into the Chinese
market. Say goodbye to the notion of GTs being only high-power luxury
coupes like the Bentley Continental GT. These new models – the GAC Honda
GT and the Dongfeng Honda GT – are quite the head-turners but on the
more budget-friendly side of things as electric family vehicles.
Design

The GAC Honda GT and Dongfeng Honda GT might share a lot more than just
a manufacturing location in China. Still, they each carry distinctive
features. While they come equipped with Honda’s signature ‘H’ logo,
their lighting arrays tell them apart. GAC’s model goes for a
double-decker LED headlight approach, while the Dongfeng rocks
Lamborghini-style Y-shaped lights.
Interior
Step inside, and these GTs pack quite the technological punch. Six
digital screens are interlined within the hi-tech interior, including
cutting-edge camera-based door mirrors. There’s a digital instrument
cluster, a central touchscreen, climate control interface, and even a
passenger-side display that’s possibly enough to distract anyone.
Performance
Although specific powertrain details remain under wraps, expectations
can be inferred from Honda’s previous Ye EV line, like the P7
crossover. It can have a single motor delivering around 268
horsepower or a dual-motor setup going up to 469 horsepower combined
with all-wheel drive. Rumor has it that the GT might mirror these
configurations, offering both performance and balance.
Driving Experience
In terms of driving feel, this GT is more like slipping behind the
wheel of the Tesla Model S rather than a traditional GT coupe. It
promises a spirited drive but with all the practicality of a
family-friendly ride. With the potential for a 50:50 weight
distribution in single-motor versions, it aims to deliver a nimble and
balanced driving experience, blending fun with daily usability.
Surely, these shiny new Honda GTs seem poised to catch the fancy of
car enthusiasts in China. However, what remains to be seen is whether Honda
can overcome any potential hurdles to get similar models on roads in
the US and beyond.
