Chery Himla Launch

The Chinese automaker Chery is making waves again with the launch of a new sub-brand focused on pickups, called Himla. This brand debuted at the Shanghai Auto Show and showcased its first model, a midsize pickup truck that aims to compete against heavyweights like the Toyota Hilux and the Ford Ranger. The Himla brand draws its inspiration from the Himalayas, which is evident in the logo reserved for the tailgate.
Design and Features

The truck presented in Shanghai is a close sibling to the KP11 prototype seen earlier in 2024. It differentiates itself with a unique color, wheel design, and a stripped-down accessory selection. It boasts eye-catching Chery styling with split LED headlights, robust skid plates, a pronounced hood, and muscular wheel arches. Plus, its rugged alloy wheels are dressed in all-terrain tires, providing decent ground clearance typically seen in high-end trims like the Ford Ranger Wildtrak.
Interior and Comfort
Stepping inside the Himla truck, one will notice a modern layout reminiscent of a Tesla. There’s a large infotainment touchscreen mounted centrally on the dashboard, and a fully digital instrument cluster sits neatly in front of the driver. Upholstered with light-colored materials that seem like leather, the cabin exudes sophistication. Rear passengers are also catered to with their own climate vents.
Performance Expectations
Although the detailed specifications are still under wraps, it’s anticipated that the Himla will be structured on a ladder-frame chassis, enabling it to handle considerable payloads and towing tasks akin to its competition. Engine choices will likely include gasoline and diesel variants, along with potential electrified powertrains to align with evolving market trends toward greener technology.
Global Ambitions
Himla trucks won’t just stick around in China. The brand plans to ship its rugged steeds to markets in Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America. Chery’s strategy includes releasing a comprehensive lineup spanning from compact to larger pickups. Combining strength and elegance, the Himla trucks aim to establish a significant presence in the global market.
Interesting to note, Chery is also reviving its Rely brand, which is set to focus on a similar segment with versatile powertrain options. This move shows Chery’s determination to diversify its offerings alongside other sub-brands like Exeed, iCar, Jaecoo, and others.
Driving Impressions
The experience behind the wheel of Himla’s midsize pickup promises to be engaging. Anticipated to rival the comfort of a Toyota Hilux and the robustness of a Ford Ranger, the Himla pickup might strike a balance between an enjoyable drive and a work-capable vehicle. With its all-terrain capabilities, this truck seems poised to dominate both the highway and the unbeaten path, likely offering smooth handling alongside commendable off-road prowess.
