Nissan took center stage at the Shanghai Auto Show with an intriguing revelation – the Frontier Pro. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill Frontier that’s sold in American dealerships. Instead, it’s a China-developed plug-in hybrid pick-up brought to life through collaboration with Dongfeng, and it’s slated for markets worldwide though it doesn’t carry the US-specific Frontier’s lineage. With this global version being a standout, particularly for its electrified powertrain, anticipation is building on how it will fare in comparison to what’s currently in showrooms.

Specs that Impress

The Frontier Pro certainly packs a punch under the hood. It features a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a dynamic electric motor, delivering a hefty 402 horsepower. This ensures a max torque output of around 590 lb-ft, making it formidable in power. The vehicle offers an EV-only range of just about 84 miles, perfect for those who deal with day-to-day urban commutes or eco-friendly errands. With a planned four-drive mode system, owners will find it adaptable to various terrains, whether it’s snow or just a regular drive.

Not Your Average Pickup

Aesthetically, the Frontier Pro sports a unique front end that gives off a muscular vibe reminiscent of older Nissan designs yet feels refreshingly modern, especially with its bold front grille. Those distinctive three horizontal LED lights give a nod to the nostalgic D21 Hardbody trucks from the ’80s. It’s nice to see how they’ve managed to blend heritage with modernity.
