Last Hurrah for the Lexus IS 500

Think about the evolution of muscle cars, and the gradual shift away from brawny V8 engines might spring to mind. The Lexus IS 500 is one of the last of its kind—a compact sedan powered by a V8—and it’s making its exit with flair. After Mercedes-AMG phased out the V8 from the C63, Lexus remained the lone warrior in this segment, but it seems the curtain is finally closing for this special ride.
Sealing its legacy, Lexus unveiled the IS 500 Ultimate Edition, a limited run of just 500 cars for the North American market. Not to be outdone, Japan is bidding farewell with the IS 500 Climax Edition. Yeah, the name might draw chuckles, much like other oddly named cars such as the Daihatsu Naked or the Ford Probe. But beneath its amusing moniker, this edition could become a collectible in no time.
Sporty Looks

The Climax Edition doesn’t just ride off into the sunset without making some noise. Sporting 19-inch forged BBS wheels dipped in matte black, it exudes a vibe of stealth. Complimenting these snazzy wheels are upgraded Brembo brakes flaunting six-piston calipers, for that extra bite.
Lexus decided neutrino particles, which zip through the cosmos at light speed, inspired the Neutrino Gray paint for this car. No rush if that isn’t clear; it just looks cool. Moreover, for those looking for variety, eight colors are on offer for this edition. Inside, the car flaunts gaudy “Climax Edition” plaques, a red and black interior theme, and even a fresh-faced dashboard clock.
Thrilling Drive
Here’s where the real fun kicks in: the engine compartment. The same beastly 472 horsepower V8 sits under the hood, pumping out 395 lb-ft of torque and driving the rear wheels mad. While a 0-60 mph sprint in 4.4 seconds doesn’t set new records, the growl from those eight cylinders is an orchestral masterpiece no competitor can easily replicate. Floor it, and this IS tops out at a respectable 149 mph. Those handy paddle shifters mean the eight-speed automatic is customizable, in case you feel like taking charge.
In Japan, the Climax edition dazzles at about $65,000. August marks its fitting debut, while in the US, drivers eager to snag the Ultimate Edition can look forward to it arriving in the fall.
As car trends shift towards efficiency and hybrid tech, the IS 500 represents a celebrated whisper of the past, as the last piper plays its tune. For those lucky enough to nab one, it’s not just a car; it’s a symphony on wheels that echoes an era rapidly redefining itself.
