The problem surfaced back in May when Joyson Safety Systems, the airbag supplier, spotted the issue during routine testing. It seems a plastic flange that holds part of the airbag system could break apart. This problematic piece can interfere with the airbag’s vent flap during an accident.

Ford is tackling the problem head-on. Owners will get notices starting July 28, advising them to hit up their local dealership. The fix? Replacement of the passenger airbag module, free of charge. The new versions will feature sturdier plastic flanges that won’t interfere with deploying safely.

It’s good to know that Ford hasn’t received reports of the issue affecting anyone yet. So, the effort here is about prevention more than damage control. Current estimates suggest about 28% of the affected vehicles might have this defect.
