Revival

Remember those tiny Smart cars buzzing around town? Well, they had a sporty cousin called the Smart Roadster that some folks might recall. Born from the same DNA as the iconic Smart ForTwo, this Roadster aimed to reignite Europe’s love affair with open-top sports cars. More than 43,000 units were produced before the curtain fell in 2005. Now, there’s some chatter about a possible electric comeback for this compact fun machine.
Possibility

Jason Allbutt, CEO of Smart UK, recently hinted at the idea of a new Roadster. He agrees that a convertible has its charm, especially in the UK where damp weather doesn’t deter fans of such cars. However, any plans for revival are still in the imagination stage as Smart is currently focused on their electric SUVs and hatchbacks.
For a brand that’s now fully electric, bringing the Roadster back would mean crafting a lightweight, zippy electric version. The real challenge will be measuring up to the spirited vibe that the original Roadster and its noisy engine provided.
Comparison

Envisioning an electric Roadster in today’s market, comparisons with the likes of an electric Mazda MX-5 can’t be ignored. Electric powertrains bring their own thrill, thanks to the instant torque they deliver. Yet, for those purists who revel in the sound of a roaring engine, this may lack a little soul. An electric Roadster would need to appeal to a new generation that embraces quiet performance and clean energy.
CEO Allbutt seems skeptical about who might buy such a vehicle. There’s hope that a new audience could emerge — one that’s ready to redefine what driving a roadster means in the EV era.
