The Recall

Rivian has announced a recall for nearly 28,000 vehicles, specifically affecting the R1T and R1S models. The issue stems from defective front turn signals that may fail to operate properly, posing a potential safety risk. This recall, which echoes the infamous lack of turn signal use some associate with BMW drivers, highlights a notable hiccup in the production of these popular electric vehicles (EVs).
What’s at Stake?

The problem arises with turn signals sourced from Myotek, based in Farmington Hills, Michigan. These components were either poorly manufactured or internally flawed, leading to their failure to illuminate or flash correctly. Such a malfunction violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. If the turn signals do fail, vehicle alert systems not only notify the driver through a message on the dashboard but also double the blinking rate of any remaining functional signals—a somewhat annoying reminder of what’s not working right.
Models Affected

Specifically, this recall involves 27,882 vehicles, encompassing R1S models built between April 29, 2024, and May 13, 2025, and R1T models produced from July 10, 2024, to May 13, 2025. Production on these fronts stopped on May 13 to mitigate further instances of this glitch.
Rivian’s Response
Rivian initiated a detailed investigation back in February, deciding to proceed with the recall by early June. While the company has thankfully not reported any accidents or injuries linked to this fault, the recall is deemed vital to prevent potential mishaps and to reassure drivers. Owners are expected to receive recall notices starting July 25, with authorized dealerships ready to inspect and replace faulty components as necessary.
Driving Experience
Despite the recall, the Rivian R1T and R1S models continue to impress with their performance characteristics. Both vehicles offer an exhilarating driving experience, blending robust horsepower with superior handling. The R1T, for example, provides the power and agility akin to a high-performance sedan while being capable of off-road adventures—a feat not easily matched by other electric trucks like the Ford F-150 Lightning.
The interiors of both models boast a quiet, luxurious cabin environment, contributing to a serene drive. The responsiveness of the steering and the seamless acceleration remind those behind the wheel that electric doesn’t mean compromising thrill. While the defect is an inconvenience, it doesn’t overshadow the innovation and rugged elegance that Rivian vehicles bring to the table. Hopefully, this recall will be a minor blip for what are otherwise standout EV offerings.
