HWA Evo Unleashed

The Revamped HWA Evo

There’s something undeniably special about a classic car getting a modern twist, and the HWA Evo does just that. Created by HWA AG, a company founded by AMG’s own Hans Werner Aufrecht, this isn’t just any restomod. The HWA Evo pays homage to the legendary Mercedes-Benz 190E Evo II, but it’s ready to compete with today’s high-performance giants. What’s more, it will soon take on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, a track that’s the stuff of legends, during the renowned 24-hour race weekend.

Two prototypes of the HWA Evo are scheduled to make demo laps during the Nürburgring 24 Hours. This event will offer fans more than just a fleeting glimpse of these machines in action with a static display at the Adenauer Racing Day on June 18, alongside Corso laps on June 20 and 21. For those venturing to the Nürburgring that weekend, the paddock stand will be showcasing these restomods up close.

Restomod Mockup

The HWA Evo isn’t your run-of-the-mill restomod; it’s a complete teardown and rebuild using a Mercedes W201 as the foundation. Stripped down to the metal, 75% of the original chassis is replaced with custom aluminum and high-strength steel components. This process results in a car with twice the torsional rigidity of its original form, setting itself up as a true race-ready competitor.

Under the hood is a robust 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine, likely borrowed from the AMG C43. This powerhouse delivers an impressive 493 horsepower and offers 405 lb-ft of torque, all managed by a specialized HWA Engine Control Unit (ECU). The HWA Evo doesn’t just stop at engine prowess; it incorporates a partnership with Bosch Engineering, creating a bespoke ESP system that includes ABS and a custom control unit.

Track-Ready Features

The modifications extend beyond the engine bay. Complementing the powertrain are high-end suspension components machined from billet, adjustable dampers from KW, and H&R anti-roll bars. Stopping power comes courtesy of Brembo brakes, with the option for carbon ceramic variants. Encasing all of this engineering marvel is a sleek carbon fiber body that marries lightweight construction with aerodynamic sophistication.

One of the HWA Evo prototypes will wear a distinctive livery, a nod to its DTM racing roots and the legendary era of the early ’90s. This particular homage adds a nostalgic layer to the contemporary engineering feats.

The HWA Evo will have a limited production run of just 100 units, each carrying a price tag around $760,000. Almost all units are already accounted for, but those lucky enough to have both the means and timing could still snag one. For enthusiasts, seeing this restomod in action at the Nürburgring offers a rare opportunity to experience a true blend of past and future automotive excellence firsthand.
