Update Time

Mercedes-Benz is freshening up the look for some of its bigger, more luxurious SUVs. Recently spotted testing at the Nurburgring were four updated SUV models: the GLE, the GLE Coupe, and the flagship GLS. It’s a clear sign that the automaker is committed to revamping its fleet with new design elements that echo the company’s rich history while also paving the way for modern luxury.
Style Changes
The facelifted models are adopting a bolder, more defined grille similar to the current E-Class, which previously introduced a tasteful throwback to the classic grille frame Mercedes was known for. These grilles are larger and have an assertive mesh design, which gives the vehicles a more distinct road presence.
Both the GLE variants and the GLS benefit from modern yet traditional Mercedes styling cues, with the GLE models featuring a grille without the fat horizontal bars and the GLS adopting three formal grille bars for a truly classic feel.
Competing Models
With these updates, Mercedes aims to keep its SUVs fresh in a very competitive market. The GLE is expected to face off against BMW’s newest X5, hitting the roads next year. This redesign will help Mercedes maintain its appeal in the midsize luxury SUV market. Meanwhile, the GLS is set to stand its ground against Audi’s revamped Q7, which is also slated for a 2026 release.
Driving Experience
On the road, these updated SUVs continue to deliver the smooth, effortless drive that Mercedes-Benz is celebrated for. The GLE offers precise handling and a plush ride that outshines many rivals in the midsize category. On the other hand, the GLS, with its three-row seating, caters more to families needing extra space, without compromising on luxury or performance. Its driving dynamics are comparable to the Audi Q7 but offer a more traditional luxury feel that is distinctively Mercedes.
Release Schedule
The last updates to the GLE and GLS were in 2023 for the 2024 model year. Based on this timeline, these newly refreshed models are anticipated to arrive by the middle of the 2026 model year, likely gearing up for the start of the 2027 season. For those looking forward to owning one, this could be an exciting year.
