The Honda Hydrogen Challenge

Honda’s taking an exciting new direction at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb by introducing a hydrogen-powered contender. While Acura is flexing muscles with its more than 360-horsepower Integra Type S in the Time Attack 1 class, Honda’s setting their sights on the Exhibition class. This year, it’s all about the daring CR-V e:FCEV, marking a bold step as the first hydrogen-fueled vehicle to take on this legendary race.
Powertrain Details

Honda aims to showcase the competitive strength of hydrogen technology with the CR-V e:FCEV at Pikes Peak. With seasoned racer, Dai Yoshihara, behind the wheel, the vehicle holds onto the production model’s powertrain everyone can buy. This includes a Michigan-made fuel cell, a front-mounted motor, a 17.7 kWh battery pack, and dual high-pressure hydrogen tanks. A specialized mobile hydrogen storage, thanks to Zero Emission Industries, accompanies the vehicle for its necessary test runs. While aiming for speed, the CR-V faces a challenge against electrified rivals such as last year’s Exhibition class leading, electrified Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, clocking an impressive 9:30.852.
Race-Ready Modifications

Honda isn’t new to making records at Pikes Peak. Since a groundbreaking performance in 1994 with a converted Civic, it has made ever bolder strides with innovative electric models. This year, Yoshihara’s CR-V benefits from sleek race adjustments like a one-inch-lowered suspension, a racing seat, safety cage, and stripped-out interior to enhance performance. Custom lightweight 18-inch wheels wrapped in Yokohama Advan A052 tires (265/45R18) coupled with specialized racing brake pads promise stopping power on the challenging 156-turn, 12.42-mile climb.
While breaking records isn’t the immediate expectation for this hydrogen trailblazer, Honda’s learning intentions are clear. The insights gained here are poised to advance hydrogen technology across various platforms. Eyes will be on the CR-V e:FCEV come June 22, hoping it paves the way for future innovation both on the racetrack and beyond.
