Chevy Surpasses Ford in EV Sales

In recent reports from General Motors, one of the standout highlights is Chevrolet’s monumental leap past Ford, securing its place as the second-largest electric vehicle (EV) brand in the United States. This marks a significant achievement for Chevy, as they have managed to outpace the iconic Ford, which registered 34,000 EV sales by the end of May. Meanwhile, Chevy charged ahead with a noteworthy 37,000 EVs sold within the same timeframe. Ford experienced a slump in their EV sales during May, hinting at shifting tides in the EV market.
Equinox EV’s Impact

Although Chevrolet hasn’t dissected their EV sales figures by model, the introduction of the affordable Equinox EV likely played a crucial role in reaching those impressive numbers. Priced from $33,600, the Equinox EV offers a lower entry point compared to Ford’s least expensive electric model, the Mustang Mach-E, which starts at $37,995. Without a competitive alternative against the Equinox EV, Ford’s struggle to keep its number two spot was, arguably, an uphill battle.
Expanding GM’s EV Lineup

The sales surge isn’t exclusive to Chevrolet alone. The broader GM portfolio, home to 13 distinct EV models, has witnessed a 94% jump in sales during the first quarter. By May’s close, GM had sold over 62,000 electric vehicles nationwide, holding a 15.5% piece of the EV market pie, more than doubling last year’s results.
What sets GM apart is its strategic choice to penetrate EV segments untouched by Ford. Vehicles like the massive Escalade IQ, one of the most sizable fully electric SUVs on the market, further broaden GM’s reach. Their lineup, augmented by the Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, and GMC Hummer EV, fulfills niches Ford has yet to tackle.
Looking Ahead
As GM gears up to reveal its Q2 sales come July, there’s high anticipation that Chevrolet’s winning streak will continue and potentially widen the gap over Ford. This optimism is underpinned by GM’s meticulous strategy around EVs. Even with the absence of the beloved Bolt – previously a staple in Chevrolet’s electric lineup – the promise of a second-generation model under $30,000 looms on the horizon. Once released, it could propel GM’s standing in the EV sector to new heights.
The future feels promising for Chevrolet and GM as they continue to craft an alluring mix of electric cars that appeal to a broad audience. Now, as the market exudes a different rhythm with every quarterly report, GM seems equipped to dance deftly to the tune, setting the pace in an electrified auto industry landscape.
